PROJECT ONE

For my first sketch draft project, I decided to use the genre of the personal essay to delve deeper in to the feelings of discomfort I felt watching the documentary "Guys and Dolls" in my Sexual Objects art history class. I came to the conclusion that what disturbed me the most about this documentary, was the assumption of consciousness inferred upon these women by their owners, and the implication that their version of a perfect woman was one who chose to have their autonomy controlled by their partners.

PROJECT TWO

For my second project, I focused on making a zine based on non-human female characters from the 1959 version of The Twilight Zone. I wanted to pull on the thread of consciousness and autonomy in non-living women I had started pulling in project one and explore my changing relationship to a television show that was really important to me as a child. I also wanted to give the treatment of these women a closer look and see how their tales of coming to terms with their humanity hold up for modern audiences.

PROJECT THREE

In this experiment, I drew up concepts for a horror manga in the vein of Junji Ito or Emily Carroll . I was interested in the ways horror could be used to create stories that made clear and potent commentaries on personal and social issues like grief, abortion rights, and body image. I ended up creating a story about a woman who seems to be haunted by totems of herself as a little girl that drive her to isolate herself further and further. I didn't end up figuring out what she was running from, but I had a grand old time putting it together. Kind of.
